Top Google Searches of 2017

Every year Google releases the top 10 searches of the previous 12 months, both for the US and Globally, did you Google all of these in 2017?

Global Searches

  1. Hurricane Irma
  2. iPhone 8
  3. iPhone X
  4. Matt Lauer
  5. Meghan Markle
  6. 13 Reasons Why
  7. Tom Petty
  8. Fidget Spinner
  9. Chester Bennington
  10. India National Cricket Team

US Searches

  1. Hurricane Irma
  2. Matt Lauer
  3. Tom Petty
  4. Super Bowl
  5. Las Vegas Shooting
  6. Mayweather vs McGregor Fight
  7. Solar Eclipse
  8. Hurricane Harvey
  9. Aaron Hernandez
  10. Fidget Spinner

For the most part these 2 lists are fairly different. Of those that appear on both lists: Hurricane Irma, Matt Lauer, Tom Petty, and the ubiquitous Fidget Spinner that stores are now overstocked with, unlike last year's entertainment focus this is more diverse.  From a natural disaster to the latest novelty to non-stop scandals 2017 kept us on our toes.

Unlike previous years there's nothing really on the list that needs explaining.  For the most part the list is major breaking news or celebrities who died.  The exception to that is the one listed celebrity who got engaged rather than passing away.  In case you don't have any teenagers in your house 13 Reasons Why is a TV Series based on a book by Jay Asher.

Top 10 Google Searches of 2016

Every year Google releases the top 10 searches of the previous 12 months, both for the US and Globally, did you Google all of these in 2016?

US Searches

  1. Powerball
  2. Prince
  3. Hurricane Matthew
  4. Pokemon Go
  5. Slither.io (the follow up to Agar.io)
  6. Olympics

  4. Prince
  5. Powerball
  6. David Bowie
  7. Deadpool
  8. Olympics
  9. Slither.io
  10. Suicide Squad

Similar to 2015 these 2 lists are fairly different. Of those that appear on both lists: Pokemon Go, Powerball, Prince Slither.io, Olympics, Trump and David Bowie, most are entertainment related.

For those who have never heard of Slither.io before, it is the follow up to the multiplayer game Agar.io released in April of 2015.  Instead of swallowing other cells in Slither.io you are a snake working to eat other snakes.

Pokemon Go is the search nearest to the top for both the US and global searches.  The hugely popular follow up to Ingress from Niantic Labs had people all over hunting for Pokemon, with some unfortunate instances of those playing in inappropriate places, like the Holocaust Museum and the 9/11 Memorial.

For those who have never heard of Agar.io before, it is a multiplayer game released in April of 2015.  The players control a cell in a map representing a petridish.  The players goal is to gain as much mass as possible by swallowing smaller cells without being swallowed themselves.  While we're not sure why this game is so exciting, 50 million plus Android downloads say there's something about it people love.
